Capita spesso che ci vengano poste domande di carattere tecnico come questa, considerato che la resina epossidica è un elemento standard nella costruzione dei nostri scafi e delle nostre coperte.
Iniziamo col dire che l’epossidica ha delle caratteristiche meccaniche del tutto superiori al vinilestere perché è più elastica, dunque meno fragile e “vetrosa”. Questo significa che sottoposta a deformazioni e sotto carico reagisce meglio. Addirittura non incorre mai in quelle microfratture dovute allo sforzo più tipiche delle altre resine.
La resina epossidica inoltre, grazie alle sue caratteristiche chimiche, è assolutamente esente da osmosi. Questo è un aspetto molto importante e ha come risultato uno scafo che “invecchia di meno” e dura di più.

What about the advantages of using epoxy resin in the hull lamination?

Sometimes it happens that people ask technical questions like this one, considering that epoxy is a standard element in the construction of our hulls and decks.
Then we can say that epoxy has much better mechanical properties than vinylester, because it is more elastic, less fragile and “glassy”. That means that when it is exposed to deformations and under stress it reacts better. It even never incurs the micro fractures, caused by effort, typical in the others resins.
Moreover, epoxy resin, thanks to its chemical features, is absolutely free from osmosis. This is a very important aspect and it gives, as result, a hull which “ages less and keeps more”.

Sly yachts ha scelto di dotare tutte le sue imbarcazioni con alberi in carbonio facendoli diventare un elemento di serie in tutta la produzione. Questo perché la tecnologia è al centro della nostra ricerca, e perché nella nostra visione una barca leggera è più divertente e meglio manovrabile.
Un albero in carbonio, a parità di resistenza, è più leggero e consente di limitare la zavorra ottenendo un dislocamento ridotto. Il risultato è sicuramente una barca più performante, ma anche più facile da timonare. Il motivo è semplice, un minor peso delle antenne, unito al buon raddrizzamento derivante dal peso posizionato nel bulbo, riduce notevolmente il beccheggio e il rollio dell'imbarcazione. Anche grazie a questa scelta, in presenza di mare formato Sly yachts garantisce un ottimo passaggio sull’onda.
L’albero in carbonio ha poi un’altra proprietà. E’ molto più rigido rispetto a quello in alluminio e quindi si sposa meglio con i risultati ottenuti dalla ricerca nel campo della veleria. Vele sempre più rigide ottimizzano le loro performance su strutture dello stesso livello.
Infine, il fatto che il carbonio sia rigido non significa neppure che sia più fragile. Tutt’altro. Di fronte a un grosso carico il carbonio è in grado di flettere moltissimo resistendo di più alle sollecitazioni. Un classico esempio di queste caratteristiche meccaniche ci viene dal mondo dell’automotive e della formula Uno. Pensiamo ai telai delle vetture. Nel passato, quando erano in alluminio, a seguito di un grosso impatto, tendevano ad accartocciarsi, un po’ come le lattine. Attualmente, grazie alla nuova tecnologia, il guidatore è molto più sicuro perché nella collisione il carbonio assorbe l’urto senza piegarsi.

Why do we put only carbon masts on Sly yachts?

Sly Yachts has chosen to equip all its yachts with carbon masts, which represent a standard element in the production. That’s because we put technology in the centre of our project and also because in our vision a light boat is more enjoyable and easy to control.
Carbon masts, resistance being equal, are lighter than the aluminium ones, so you can limit the ballast, obtaining a reduced displacement. The result is a more performing boat, easy to manoeuvre. The ground is simple to understand, a less weight in the antennas and the ballast in the bulb, reduce the boat pitching. Thanks to this choice, on rough seas Sly yachts guarantees a perfect crossing of wheels.
Carbon masts have also another property. They are more rigid than the others and they can be better combined with the new results obtained by the research in the sails field. Even more rigid sails can be better optimized on equal structures.
The rigidity of carbon masts doesn’t mean that they are more brittle. On the contrary under a big load the carbon fibre can flex more and endure the stress. We can borrow an example of these properties from the automotive world and Formula One. Let’s think about the chassis. In the past, when the chassis was in aluminium, after a deep impact, it could curl up like a tin. Now, thanks to the new technologies the driver is safer, because during the collision the chassis absorbs the crash without bending.
